The All-New Google Pixel 3a Mobile Review

The All-New Google Pixel 3a Mobile Review

We have the latest tech when it comes to supplying mobile phones. This now includes the brand new Google Pixel 3a mobile phone.

The 3a has an ambitious objective – to deliver premium smartphone features, in an affordable model. And we think the 3a does just that.

This 147g handset has 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, with a 5.6in FHD+ OLED screen. It boasts an impressive 12.2MP rear camera with OIS and 8MP front-facing camera. It uses Android Pie software, with firmware and major version updates guaranteed by Google.

The 3a has inherited some great features from the more expensive Pixel 3, and a high standard of spec you won’t find in similarly priced handsets.

Camera

The camera spec is brilliant for its price point, and one of the model’s biggest draws. Top shot is a great feature, which takes a few photos before and after you hit the shutter button, helping to capture that perfect shot, no matter how wriggly your subject is!

Night sight is another good camera mode, helping achieve a better depth of colour and detail in lower light. There is also a time-lapse video function, where you can set the time intervals for maximum personalisation.

Display

The OLED display has a resolution of 2220×1080 and a density of 441-pixels-per-inch. We are really impressed by the display. The image is very vibrant, and it definitely rivals that of more expensive models.

Battery

The battery won’t let you down, with 3,000 mAh and 18w fast charging. Depending on what you use it for, you should be able to go 24 hours without charging.

Audio

We are very pleased to see the return of the headphone jack with this model. The audio is clear, with a punchy bass at higher volumes, and the stereo speakers are glorious!

The compromises

When navigating between recently used apps it is smooth and quick. But for more taxing operations, such as downloading a large app, it can be a little slower – no major cause for concern.

The 3a doesn’t have face recognition, but it does include a fingerprint scanner that is incredibly speedy.

It’s a shame this innovative device doesn’t have wireless charging. The plastic body lacks a premium feel compared to Google’s other metal and glass offerings – but that is simply because Google is prioritising function over form to achieve great value for money. So we think these compromises can be easily overlooked.

The verdict

Despite the fantastic affordability of the 3a, it does not perform like a budget model. It is a great all-rounder that will suit the majority of users. We are incredibly impressed with what it offers for the low price and are pleased that Google has introduced a more affordable option. Long may it continue.
